The vertical, constraining orientation of the human figures and buildings in this weaving depict the conformity necessary for living harmoniously with each other under crowded conditions. The rigid rows going up, down, and across show ever-growing numbers of people and buildings being crammed together in regimented conformity. Woven with a dark warp and a light weft, the color and depth of shade appearing on the surface of the weaving is controlled by a weave structure that determines the percentage of warp and weft appearing on the surface. |
