In my work I use familiar images as symbols of human culture, thought, tradition, and behavior. In
Heritage I,
images have been chosen to portray the occupations of the families of both my parents -- some having been traced
back through ancestral legends to biblical times. In this piece the images represent, and have been segregated
according to what traditionally has been regarded either as men's or women's work. Utilizing the format of the
quilt square, with its arrangement of visual images to create balance and symmetry, the men's pursuits have been
depicted in the center of the weaving, while the objects portraying what in the past has been considered women's
work are arranged in the border.
