War
does terrible things to ordinary people. It provides opportunity for
savagery and violence by individuals who are normally confined by social
mores and laws. War can deprive anyone of home, food, security, job,
family, belongings, and life itself. Women and children are
especially vulnerable to the ravages of violence. All people are
hostages in one sense or another in times of war.
